Induction hobs heat the pan directly using a magnetic field, which makes them fussier than gas or ceramic. That is why many reported faults turn out to be a pan, a setting or a power issue rather than a broken hob. Try these checks in order.
Seven things to check
- Is the pan induction-compatible? Hold a fridge magnet to the base. If it clings firmly the pan will work on induction. Aluminium, copper and glass pans will not unless they have a magnetic base.
- Pan size and position. The base should cover most of the marked cooking zone and sit in the centre. A pan that is too small or off-centre may not be detected.
- Child lock or cleaning lock. A key or lock symbol lit on the panel means the controls are locked. Follow your manual to release it, which is usually a press and hold on the lock symbol.
- A wet or dirty control panel. Spills, boiled-over liquid or a damp cloth on the touch controls can make the hob beep, switch off or ignore your touch. Wipe it dry and try again.
- Overheat protection. After long high-power cooking, especially in a hot kitchen or with the ventilation gap under the hob blocked, the hob can reduce power or shut down to protect itself. Let it cool and keep the vents clear.
- The power supply. Check the breaker or isolator has not tripped. If one zone works and another does not, or the breaker trips again straight after resetting, do not keep resetting it.
- Any flashing code or symbol. Note it down or take a photo. It helps us diagnose the fault before we arrive.
When to stop and call
If the hob will not respond at all, the breaker keeps tripping, you hear crackling, or the glass top is cracked, stop using it. Never open a hob yourself: it contains high-voltage components, and a cracked glass top should not be used.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Siemens induction hob beep and switch off?
Commonly a spill or damp cloth on the touch controls, a pan that is too small or off-centre, or overheat protection after long high-power cooking.
Can any pan be used on an induction hob?
Only pans with a magnetic base. The magnet test above shows this in seconds.
Can a cracked glass top be repaired?
A cracked glass top should not be used. The hob needs professional repair or glass replacement before you cook on it again.
